The Basque economy has achieved levels of convergence with the European economy. Thanks to the economic dynamism of the 90´s, the Gross Domestic Product per capita in Euskal Herria reaches the average of the European Union. The evolution of the Basque economy has, however, been totally different in each of its seven territories.

The primary sector has deeper roots in Navarre and Iparralde (Northern Basque Country), while industry has a grater hold in the Basque Autonomous Community. The importance of tourism and trade stands out in Iparralde. Obviously, however, tourism has enjoyed an incredible boom period over recent years throughout Euskal Herria and the service sector has taken a significant lead over the primary and secondary sectors.

The Basque economy is one of the healthiest in the Spanish state and the unemployment rate features among the lowest. Still, however, on average, more men are employed than women and the arrival en masse of immigrants makes socio-political control difficult.

The border between Iparralde (Northern Basque Country) and Hegoalde (Southern Basque Country) disappeared a few years ago and this certainly provides us with a wonderful opportunity to work together in this area.
