The number of Basque speakers is now higher than it used to be, and higher still if we include those with a passive knowledge of the language. The percentage of Basque speakers as part of the entire population, however, has dropped and, consequently, its social presence is lower in quantitative terms.
In the Basque Autonomous Community, Euskera is being recuperated significantly and uninterruptedly. The same is also true of the Community of Navarre, albeit more slowly and in a more moderate fashion. In Iparralde (Northern Basque Country), however, the language is in continuous decline.
