9 clubs from Euskal Herria to take part in the 8th tug-of-war world championship on rubber

This morning, UDALBILTZA and the Federation of Euskadi of Basque Games and Sports have signed an agreement to support the clubs from Euskal Herria who will be taking part in the 8th Tug-of-War World Championships on rubber. The agreement has been signed by Peio Iparragirre and Marian Urkijo, on behalf of UDALBILTZA and Isaac Izurieta, the Chairman of the Federation of Euskadi of Basque Games and Sports. Through this agreement, UDALBILTZA offers its sponsorship and aid amounting to 24,750 euros for the Basque clubs who will be taking part in the World Championship.

The Championship is to be held in Glasgow (Scotland) from the 19th to the 22nd of February and nine clubs from Euskadi will be taking part in it. Five will be women’s teams: Imotz (Nafarroa), Badaiotz (Araba), Auzolan (Gipuzkoa), Gaztedi (Bizkaia) and Torrekolanda (Bizkaia); and four men’s teams: Abadiño (Bizkaia), Auzolan (Gipuzkoa), Arrizkuzubi (Araba) and Beti-Gazte (Nafarroa).

For UDALBILTZA `sponsoring these 9 clubs is very important because it means promoting a sport which is deeply rooted in Euskal Herria and because World Championships offer an unbeatable occasion to demonstrate the high level of tug-of-war teams. Iparragirre and Urkijo have added that: “the participation of our tug-of-war teams in World Championships is an essential condition for ensuring the future of this sport; because we all know that World Championships constitute an unquestionable inducement and incentive to maintain the sport of Basque tug-of-war at an elite level on the world stage.´

For his part, Isaac Izurieta, in addition to thanking UDALBILTZA for its sponsorship, is sure of `that the Basque teams will play a great role in the World Championships, demonstrating the fact that Basque tug-of-war is at a high level internationally,´ despite the fact that the championships will be held on British rubber, when we are used to Dutch rubber.
