Udalbiltza - 2004/03/14
Julian EIZMENDI, Chairman of UDALBILTZA and Mayor of Azpeitia, on behalf of all the municipally-elected councillors who are working in favour of our Institution and its objectives, wishes to state the following in view of the murder committed in Iruñea-Pamplona and the claims relating to the terrorist attack in Madrid last Thursday:
1. - UDALBILTZA firmly condemns the murder of Angel BERROETA yesterday in Iruñea-Pamplona at the hands of a police national. At the same time, it wishes to express its sorrow, closeness to and solidarity with all those affected by this murder and their family members.
2. - It is unacceptable for anybody to take `the law´ into their own hands; revenge cannot be allowed; nobody is entitled to set themselves up to take control over the life of another person.
3.- As regards the terrorist attack in Madrid, as we called for, ETA has denied its participation; in any event, as we have pointed out on numerous occasions, ETA has a fresh chance to provide the most valuable and greatest contribution to Euskal Herria: to definitively abandon its weapons. Euskal Herria rejects violence, does not want ETA and Basques wish to decide on their future freely and democratically.
4. - The Spanish Government and the PP, as in many other cases, have acted using lies, manipulation and concealment of information. We demand political accountability and expect citizens to give a firm response to this type of action in the elections held today.
5. - UDALBILTZA thinks that there is one path in order to overcome the conflict we are experiencing in Euskal Herria and in other parts of the world: that of non-violence, respect for the human rights of all persons, dialogue and respect for the democratic decisions taken by Peoples.
In Euskal Herria, on the 14th of March 2004
