El pleno del Parlamento Europeo rechazó ayer la resolución promovida por el PP que cuestiona el sistema catalán de inmersión lingüística en la educación y aprobó un texto alternativo -promovido por el PSOE, Convergència i Unió, PNV, Iniciativa per Catalunya-Verds y Eusko Alkartasuna- que resalta que es `esencial´ salvaguardar el multilingüismo en los países o regiones en que coexistan dos o más lenguas oficiales.[+]

In a surprise move an alternative multilingualism report was passed at Plenary in the European Parliament today led by a coalition of MEPs, Maria Badia (PES), Ignasi Guardans (ALDE) and Mikel Irujo (EFA-Greens), and backed by the language NGO EBLUL. The alternative resolution overturned the controversial report tabled by Vasco Graca Moura (EPP), winning by 335 votes to 279 with 69 abstentions.[+]

The Basque Government has published, through the Department of Culture, the book `To know the Basque Country´, a work that is intented to be used as a manual for immigrants and Diaspora Basques to better know the diverse aspects of the Basque Culture. The book has been published into the principle languages of the locals, immigration, the Diaspora, and for tourism (Basque, Spanish, English, French, Chinese, Arabic, and Romanian) and topics like the culture, language, society, values, institutions, economy, and the political system of government are discussed. DELIVERY OF THE 'ENE' PRIZE. Representatives of Eusko Ikaskuntza-Society of Basque Studies and of the Eskualdunen Biltzarra Basque Center of Bordeaux participated last February 4th in the Basque city of Baiona in the act of delivery of the ENE Prize 2008 to the Euskal Etxea of Bordeaux. The reward had been granted last December 3, International Day of the Basque Language (Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna, ENE), for the hard work of support and diffusion of the Basque language developed by this 'Maison Basque' along the year and throught the years. The Basque language feature film Kutsidazu bidea, Ixabel, (Show me the way, Ixabel) has won the second European Minority Film Award in the North Frisian capital of Husum.


The Film Festival presented five recent movies in Basque, Frisian, Ladin, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. The jury decided to give the award to the Basque movie because of the quality of the script, the humour and excellent acting.[+]
